Erin Brockovich is a renowned consumer advocate and environmental activist based in Los Angeles, USA.
In 2016, Brockovich helped propel a longstanding dispute between Aviemore residents and Scottish Water to the spotlight, where it was picked up by Daily Record, The Times, a BBC News segment, and The Telegraph. (Despite the concern, Scottish Water ultimately proceeded with the planned chloramination treatment process in summer 2017.)
Brockovich’s work with the Aviemore residents is mentioned in H.K. Anderson et al’s 2024 paper ‘They’re telling us it’s safe, but how do we know it’s safe?’ Different stakeholder perspectives on drinking water safety. Further details about the wider Aviemore situation, including updates on the more recent Scottish Parliament petition and NHS review, can be found in H.K. Anderson et al’s 2025 paper Water conflicts: Exploring how stakeholder behaviours influence conflict (de-)escalation in practice.
Today, Brockovich runs a crowd-sourced online hub, which encourages anyone (anywhere in the world) to report an environmental or health concern for her and her team to review, especially where related to groundwater contamination.
