Loch Leven Sea Savers
Loch Leven Sea Savers is a community citizen-science group of all ages, established to address long-standing concerns about water quality in the loch, the first task being sewage discharge.
Papa Westray Community-Owned Water System
Papa Westray is a small island in the north of Orkney. Its water supply system was established in 2000 and connects five wells to 56 residential properties, including short-term lets, and an additional 11 facilities, including the Co-op, hostel, and school.
Aquatron Separator for a Composting Septic Tank
Aquatron is a simple plastic moulding that separates solids from flowing liquids without any moving parts. Solid waste is broken down into compost by worms in the chamber below the Aquatron separator, while liquids are diverted for further treatment or disposal.
The Kyles Coastal Community
Kyles Coastal Community is a group of volunteers in West Cowal and Bute who are raising awareness about the impact of sewage pollution on the local environment. The group organises film screenings, interviews, and protests including a successful “Dare to Dip” event in August 2025 to highlight the need for jobby-free seas and beaches.
Bridget Bennett
Bridget is researching private community wastewater systems in Scotland, with a focus on 1) how they are managed and supported and 2) how they could be more innovative and effective. Her research seeks to address the challenges communities face in accessing the correct information, technology and support for their off-mains wastewater systems.
